Musical Madness

Including a world premiere by violinist-composer Giancarlo Latta

From outrageous fugues to murderous madrigals, KINETIC closes their season with a daring and virtuosic program that spans four centuries and includes two premieres.

Centering on the famously shocking Grosse Fuge, one of Beethoven's last works, "Musical Madness" features six works by composers who dared to challenge the status quo of their time, revealing various elements of musical risqué. The program also offers a nod to our rich and ever-growing musical lineage, with composers finding inspiration from the past: Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov recalls the ghost of Astor Piazolla in his Tango-infused Last Round; Erkki-Sven Tüür pays homage to the alarmingly progressive music of Renaissance duke, Carlo Gesualdo in his haunting L’ombra della croce – which will be a U.S. Premiere – and KINETIC’s very own violinist-composer, Giancarlo Latta will offer his own reflections upon Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge in his new work, written specially for KINETIC.

Program
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Adagio & Fugue
Carlo Gesualdo: Moro, lasso, al mio duolo
Erkki-Sven Tüür: L’ombra della croce (U.S. Premiere)
Osvaldo Golijov: Last Round
Giancarlo Latta: Commissioned Work (World Premiere)
Ludwig van Beethoven: Grosse Fuge, Op. 133
