Winners of the Avalon International Competition: Houston and World Premieres

Some of Houston's finest musicians take on the challenge of presenting brand-new and cutting-edge music for the first time!

The annual Avalon International Competition for Composers celebrates new, exciting, and highly original contemporary music rooted in the classical tradition by both young and more established composers.

The competition concert showcases the stellar quality of Houston performing artists and ensembles who relish the challenge of learning and presenting works of great difficulty.

Through the competition, the Foundation for Modern Music honors its late artistic director, Robert Avalon (1955 - 2004), who helped develop and initiate several important new projects for the foundation - including this competition for composers.Read more

Houston’s premiere multicultural choir presents an engaging program celebrating 25 seasons of powerful vocal music. Reflecting on its legacy of performing songs from a broad spectrum of cultures and languages, International Voices Houston brings back several memorable favorites from over the years, while also looking forward with some exciting new compositions. This choral program features music in several languages, including: English, Korean, Spanish, Bosnian, French, Japanese, Arabic, Swahili, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Akan, and Maori. Join the dance with this toe-tapping program! The artist-led, artist-curated Kinetic Ensemble closes its season by exploring the role of ‘play’ within the ensemble. Collaborating with Lydia Hance at Frame Dance and featuring smaller ensembles within Kinetic, the program invites an interplay between music and dance, culminating in a celebration of optimism and togetherness.Read more

The Return of Ayke Agus!

Join Musica Tra Amici co artistic directors Eric Halen and Brinton Averil Smith with a very special guest artist, Ayke Agus, the longtime collaborator of the legendary violinist Jascha Heifetz. In this unique concert experience, Dr. Agus will share anecdotes from her life among the legendary musicians, discuss the nuance of the interpretation in the Romantic style they embodied, and perform beautiful music including the Brahms B major piano trio, works of Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and many of the transcriptions on which she collaborated with Mr. Heifetz.Read more

An evening-length multimedia work by composer Ben Morris, Longleaf tells the story of the longleaf pine forest, an endangered ecosystem spread throughout the American Southeast with its last stands in rural East Texas. The piece traces the history of the tree and the and it's unique relationship to fire with video projections, historical photographs, natural soundscapes, and music, aiming to raise awareness about the ecological importance of old-growth forests, and encourage forest preservation and appreciation.Read more
