Iconoclast Artists

Mission

Iconoclast is a growing community of young artists that provides unique support and encouragement for hundreds of students from five of Houston’s public schools and two juvenile detention centers.

About

Founded in 2014, by Marlon Lizama and Matt Russell Iconoclast Artists is a free, non-profit (501(c)3) in-school program, serving at-risk youth at over 20 locations, including high schools, middle schools and juvenile justice facilities within Houston’s and Galveston’s most underserved communities.

With classroom instruction in creative writing and expression, Iconoclast takes over core curriculum classes once a week to provide academic, artistic, and social and emotional support. More information at: http://iconoclastartists.org

The community of support created through this program and its events breaks through the barriers of race, religion, socio-economics and ethnicity, providing a brave space for our courageous young artists to be heard.

On May 2, 2019 Iconoclast Artists will celebrate the publication of their 4th annual student poetry anthology at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, featuring students performing their most inspiring pieces. As published authors, these students have the rare opportunity for their voices to be heard by a large and diverse audience, while raising funds for scholarships and expansion of the program into more schools.
