Who is truly CAGED? The piece explores themes of captivity, power dynamics, and the blurred lines between oppressor and oppressed.
This is Houston Dance Consortium's Premiere Production, featuring choreography by Persi Mey, Quimen Carpenter-Sanchez, and other local choreographers. Under the direction of Jennifer San Miguel, HDC has created a production nurturing collaboration across the fields of dance, videography, and art to create a piece that speaks to compassion and social change. Join us June 29th and 30th 2026 7pm for an amazing performance and Q&A after with the dancers, HDC Directors, and our partner organizations.

SCENE 2: “THE LION” The Story of Captivity begins for us with the Romans, Egyptians, and lions. They ‘conquered’ the mightiest beast... Glory. Pride. Legacy.
SCENE 3: “THE ZOO” Tracking the journey of animals for display throughout time. For the majesty and beauty that you behold... We Bore Scars That No One Showed
SCENE 4: “PRESERVATION” At some point our human empathy gave rise to change and we started to act on the behalf of animals to reverse the damage we have done. If we knew then what we know now... Live Free. Be Wild.
SCENE 5: “HUMANITY” A look through history at how we treat each other and ourselves. Discover the parallels and impacts of many generations. We don’t know where we are going until we look at our past... Bravery in the face of danger. Love in the face of hate.
SCENE 6: “BLURRED LINES” The connection we have with pets are lifelong bonds. These relationships are valuable and enterprising, supportive and sustaining, they take effort and commitment. There is love, abuse, neglect, and a deed of ownership. How can we truly be free... The truths that bind us, may wear the mask of love.
SCENE 7: “RELEASE” What happens when a caged animal/person is let into the world after years of mistreatment? Our fate may be sealed from the moment we are born... The decision to change destiny is yours.
