Established in 1968, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Houston covers a consular jurisdiction of five South Central states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.
Traditionally, these South Central states have played a significant role in American history, literature, philosophy, and arts, leaving a distinct impression on many Koreans as the foundation of a uniquely American culture. However, over the past years, these five states have also witnessed increasingly vibrant social and economic developments as a gateway to Central America. They have become an important national hub in the areas of economy, trade, science, education and culture, contributing to more frequent exchanges and deeper cooperation between Korea and the United States.
Texas, where the Korean Consulate General Office in Houston is located, has the second-largest Electoral College representation. It boasts second biggest economy in the U.S and is home to 54 Fortune 500 corporate headquarters and numerous other global companies. Over 40 Korean companies are represented in the state and Korea is Texas’ top five trade partner. Furthermore, the region is important politically and economically with Texas cities of Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio ranking as top 10 U.S. cities and the state capitol Austin coming in at No.1 as the Best City in the U.S. to Live in 2017.
Around 140,000 Korean people reside in these five South Central states, making positive contributions to the American society and economy in a wide range of areas including medical, aerospace, and energy fields. Also, a growing number of second and third generation Koreans from the region are taking the lead and working as a bridge to promote friendly cooperation and solidify strong relationship between Korea and these five states.
I am honored to have this opportunity to share Korean culture with our friends in the United States, as well as strengthen the political and economic ties to realize the full potential of bilateral relations between our two countries. Additionally, the Consulate General is committed to work hand-in-hand with the Korean community and will make every effort to protect Korean nationals and support Korean businesses in the region.
I look forward to your continued support and cooperation. Thank you.
