About

Our HistoryIn 1993, Hispanic business owners in Houston experienced a troubling wave of robberies targeting both their businesses and homes. Many victims chose not to report these crimes to law enforcement out of fear, but the incidents became a frequent topic of conversation among families, friends, and the local business community.Deeply concerned by the growing number of affected entrepreneurs, Mr. Rafael Ortega, founder of Michoacanas Meat Markets, sought the guidance of Judge Arturo Ureste. Judge Ureste encouraged him to unite the Hispanic business community, organize a formal effort to report these crimes to the Houston Police Department, and establish a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and supporting Hispanic entrepreneurs. Judge Ureste went on to serve as an advisor to the organization for many years. The first business leaders to join Mr. Ortega's vision were:

  • José Camarena – Taquerías Arandas
  • Elma Delgado – Barry Dinero a México
  • Gelacio Torres – La Tapatía Restaurants
  • Ramón Castillo – Castillo Jewelry Store
  • Juan M. Romo – Meat Markets

Later that same year, additional leaders joined the Board of Directors, including:

  • Lic. Jacob Monty – Monty Law & Partners
  • Guillermo Hernández – Latino America Sounds
  • César Rodríguez – Don Eraqui's Restaurant

The organization was originally founded under the name Comerciantes Latinos Unidos de Houston. In 2002, it officially adopted the name Cámara de Empresarios Latinos de Houston (CELH) to better reflect its growing mission and expanding reach. The organization's original purpose was to unite and protect Hispanic business owners and their families. As the organization evolved, its mission expanded to include providing business education, professional development, networking opportunities, mentorship, advocacy, and resources that help entrepreneurs build successful and sustainable businesses. From 1993 through 2011, membership fluctuated between 50 and 125 affiliated companies. Today, the Cámara proudly represents more than 450 member companies throughout the United States and over 200 international member companies, with chapters and strategic partnerships across South America, Central America, Mexico, as well as chapters in Florida (Miami) and New Jersey. For more than three decades, the Cámara has remained committed to empowering entrepreneurs, strengthening businesses, and creating opportunities that positively impact both the Hispanic business community and society as a whole.Today, our work is guided by five core pillars:
