Founded by Emilie Anne, Wu Wei Company is a creation-driven dance and theatre company dedicated to original, interdisciplinary work. Through collaborations with international artists, the company develops storytelling that integrates dance, theatre, mime, poetry, and both Eastern and Western movement practices.
The name “Wu Wei” draws from the Chinese philosophical concept wú wéi (??), often translated as “effortless action” or “non-doing”—a way of moving in harmony with natural rhythms rather than forcing outcomes. This principle deeply informs the company’s creative process. The name also echoes the homophone wú wèi (??), meaning “fearless.” Together, these meanings reflect a dual commitment to flow and courage, shaping work that is both intuitive and bold.
Wu Wei Company’s first full-length production, The Lion’s Roar: In the Footsteps of the Prince Who Became Buddha, will premiere on June 2, 2026 at Midtown Arts and Theatre Center Houston.
Alongside performance, Wu Wei Company offers Spiral Flow classes. Integrating elements of Qi Gong, Tai Chi, yoga, and dance, this movement practice invites students into a deeper awareness of the body’s natural intelligence. Through breath-centered flow sequences, body awareness exercises, and guided improvisation, participants will cultivate space, softness, and strength in a supportive and accessible environment.
