Mission

Point of Departure: Houston’s Classical Music Variety Show exists to increase the accessibility of music programming in Houston and invite new audiences into the scene through interdisciplinary collaboration. POD was founded as a love letter to Houston’s arts scene; while its main medium is classical music, its aim is to show off the best of Houston’s arts scene as a whole. Long-term, POD aims to increase Houston’s artistic profile nationally, while supporting and showcasing the thriving arts scene within the city.

Point of Departure: Houston’s Classical Music Variety Show (POD) is a one-of-a-kind music series that presents thematic programs of classical and classical-adjacent music in a 70s variety show-style format, complete with skits, banter, costumes, lighting, and more!Founded by Houston-based pianist James Palmer, POD’s debut season consists of three shows: Coffeehouse Music Salon (October ’26), American Landscapes (December ’26), and Create Your Own Adventure! (February ’27). Bringing together the best performers in Houston, these shows will also feature world premieres of music by composers Karim Al-Zand, Sam Wu, and Nicky Sohn, as well as visual designs of Houston-based artist Nick Rainey.
