As part of the Opening Night festivities, artist, professor, and founder of The Living Culture Initiative, Michael Mercil, will not only perform his work, Reading the Daily News, but will begin the evening with a lecture titled The Near, The Low, The Common: An Artist Performs the Public University, which calls for university campuses to be spaces for cultural reflection and cultural production. This lecture coincides with the Opening Night Celebration as an opportunity to enjoy many facets of the festival in one location.

While the Opening Night Celebration is unticketed, Mercil’s lecture does require a ticket.

Join us as we kick off CounterCurrent week with music, performance, and libations on the University of Houston Campus. The party will get started at 5pm with beverages and bites and will be highlighted by the Horn Concerto for an Orchestra of Automobiles, at 6pm performed by local musicians using the horns of Houston's most unique Art Cars in observance of Art Car Week—last performed at the Mitchell Center by The Art Guys in 2006—and a performance of Reading the Daily News by Michael Mercil, artist, professor, and founder of The Living Culture Initiative. The festivities will continue at CounterCurrrent's official bar, Mongoose versus Cobra, after the reception concludes on campus.

NOTES

While the Opening Night Celebration is unticketed, the lecture in the Quintero does require a free ticket.
