In Vietnamese folklore, the mythical bird the Phoenix represents regeneration and rebirth. Our season finale, Phoenix Ascending, celebrates Vietnamese culture and symbolizes the power of music to build bridges and to promote peace and reconciliation. Academy Award® nominee, Emmy and Grammy Winner Vanessa Võ, đàn bầu, joins for the premiere of 20x2020 No. 14 by Vietnamese experimental composer Vũ Nhât Tân; Vo is also featured in Alexandra du Bois’ (20x2020 No. 6 composer) groundbreaking work for 22-piece chamber ensemble, Within Earth, Wood Grows, commissioned to honor the 15th anniversary of the normalization of relations between the U.S. and Vietnam. Powerful string quartet works by Vietnam veteran-turned composer Kimo Williams provide a glimpse into this artist’s inspirational life story.
The best of Houston’s entrepreneurial chamber ensembles join Apollo to finish our anniversary season with a bang, including WindSync and members of Kinetic and Loop38.
