Musica Tra Amici's special guest artist for this concert, Ayke Agus, is originally from Indonesia with Chinese, Dutch and Javanese ancestry. She was a prodigy child who played violin and piano at the age of 7. After winning several competitions, she was offered full scholarships at Juilliard School of Music (Nueva York) and the University of Southern California at L.A. Her acceptance into the Jascha Heifetz masterclass at USC began an enduring collaboration with the legendary violinist - both as a violin student and as his piano accompanist- until the end of his illustrious life. Her long association with the Jascha Heifetz included many performances and chamber music concerts, including with the acclaimed Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, in addition to her collaborations with Heifetz in completing his published transcriptions for violin and piano. Ms. Agus' understanding and perspective on Heifetz and the Romantic style of interpretation practiced by his generation offers a unique insight into the style and approach to music that characterized this golden age of string playing that is largely forgotten in modern times.
In this very special concert event Dr. Agus will share anecdotes from her life among the legendary musicians, discuss the nuance of the interpretation in the Romantic style they embodied, and perform beautiful music with Musica Tra Amici co-artistic directors Eric Halen and Brinton Averil Smith, including the Brahms B major piano trio, works of Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and many of the transcriptions on which she collaborated with Mr. Heifetz. We believe both the performers and audience will leave the concert with a new perspective and appreciation for the style of interpretation that marks what many consider to be the Golden Age of classical music performance. Guests will also have the chance to speak with Ayke following the concert at a reception with wine and hors d'oeuvres.
