Assemblage for Three Pianos is a new musical performance and composition for three pianos based on the musical works of a wide swath of Houston bands, composers and musicians. Details and melodies from 72 works by these artists have been distilled into small variations by local artist Anthony Barilla. These variations will then be performed simultaneously on three pianos in a constant cycle that will last for three hours, resulting in an ambient sonic tapestry drawn from Houston's rich and diverse musical community.

Assemblage for Three Pianos was created by soliciting input from Houstonians about their favorite Houston musicians and performers. A wide cross section of musicians was gathered, all of whom either originated in or spent time creating work in Houston. They range from the famous to the lesser known, spanning over a hundred years of Houston's musical history, including jazz, contemporary chamber music, pop, blues, folk, techno, rock and more. Artists that inspired the variations in this performance include Amaru TMN, Ancient Cat Society, Aurum Son, B L A C K I E, Herschel Berry and The Natives, Juke Boy Bonner, Anthony Brandt, Bun B, Chamillionaire, Charlambides, Rodney Crowell, The Crusaders, Culturcide, Dead Horse, Dende, Destiny's Child, Devin the Dude, Diptera, La Fiebre, Lil' Flip, football, etc., Kam Franklin, Grady Gaines and The Texas Upsetters, Nick Gaitan and The Umbrella Man, Geto Boys, Hearts of Animals, Lightnin' Hopkins, Johnathan Hulett, Juicebox, Keshi, Khruangbin, King's X, Maxo Kream, Linus Pauling Quartet, Lotic, La Mafia, Barbara Mandrell, Matty & Mossy, Megan Thee Stallion, Mister Data, Mydolls, Nancy's Son, Johnny Nash, Tobe Nwigwe, Pauline Oliveros, Hasaan Olu, Pain Teens, Fat Pat, Eloy Pérez, The Poserz, Really Red, Red Krayola, Kenny Rogers, Say Girl Say, Shallowater, Brother Cecil Shaw, Los Skarnales, Victoria Spivey, Sprawl, Swimwear Department, T Lavois Thiebaud, Emily Ayer and LIMB, Don Toliver, The Tontons, Fat Tony, Townes Van Zandt, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Vodi, Little Joe Washington, Wild Moccasins, Carolyn Wonderland, Greg Wood and ZZ Top.
Barilla selected one song by each of these artists, then selected one element of that song: this might be a vocal melody, a small guitar pattern or a synthesizer hook. A variation was then written for piano inspired by this element. This variation could be at any tempo, but in every case was designed to last only 90 seconds. In the final performance, each variation will be played simultaneously with two others, arranged in different orders, and repeated multiple times to create a constantly changing sonic work. Certain elements (choice of octave, use of pedals, etc.) are left up to the performers to determine based on a system of casting dice. The resulting performance will be one-of-a-kind, presumably one time only, and a unique tribute to Houston's musical family.
The performers will be Yvonne Chen, Rodolfo Morales, James Palmer and Chelsea de Souza. Assemblage for Three Pianos is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.
