Musiqa & Houston Ballet II

Musiqa in Motion

A New Music Collaboration with Houston Ballet II

Musiqa and Houston Ballet II proudly present two performances of new music and new dance, including the world premiere of a new work by Musiqa Emerging Composer commission winner Luis Quintana. All tickets are Pay-What-You-Can.

Odyssey, performed to Unconditional (Following a Bird) by Italian composer Ezio Bosso.

Odyssey was choreographed by Houston Ballet Academy Graduate Sara Guo as part of a farewell performance for a group of graduating Houston Ballet II dancers. Ezio Bosso was an Italian composer, pianist, double bass player and composer.

Saudade, performed to Gustave Le Gray by Caroline Shaw

Saudade is a new work choreographed by Houston Ballet soloist Jacquelyn Long. Gustave Le Gray was written by American Caroline Shaw who, at the age of 30, was the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music. This work for solo piano is inspired by groundbreaking French photographer Le Gray and Chopin’s Op. 17 #4, which Shaw layers into the larger work.

Dzov Yerku Kooynov [Sea of Two Colors] by Armenian-American composer Mary Kouyoumdjian is inspired by the life of Komitas, the Armenian priest widely considered to be the father of Armenia's national school of music, and a key figure in Armenian ethnomusicology. Mary Kouyoumdjian is a composer and documentarian with projects ranging from concert works to multimedia collaborations and film scores. Dzov Yerku Kooynov is written for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano.

Luis Quintana is an award-winning Puerto Rican composer based in Paris. After completing studies at the Paris Conservatory (CNSMDP) and the IRCAM Cursus, he has been involved in various projects internationally. In 2023 he won Musiqa’s Emerging Composer commission. His visit to Houston is supported by the French Consulate General in Houston and Villa Albertine.

Musiqa in Motion features Doug DeVries (flute), Yevgeny Dokshansky (clarinet), Jacob Schafer (violin), Christopher Ellis (cello) and Zhu Zhu (piano). Dancers performing include Quinton Brooks, Kieryn Brophy, Nathaniel Geis, Yeva Hrytsak, Ayumi Kobayashi, Henry Lichtmacher, Jordan Long, Olivia McBain, Macy Richter, Joan Sempere Martinez, Lexi Utz, Edouard Wormser and Garrett Yut.

Musiqa in Motion is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance and the Texas Commission on the Arts. Musiqa's 2024/25 season is supported by Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University, The Amphion Foundation, Inc., The Brown Foundation, Inc., The Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
