This Mother's Day, join your friends at Musica Tra Amici as we gather together to celebrate the genius of Franz Schubert. An all-star ensemble, including Houston Symphony concertmaster Yoonshin Song, principal viola Joan DerHovsepian, principal cello Brinton Averil Smith, violinist Tong Yan, and cellist Charles Seo, perform Schubert's intense and riveting single movement Quartettsatz followed by what many consider to be among the very greatest chamber music works ever written, Schubert's C major quintet for two violin, viola, and two cellos. The quintet was Schubert's last instrumental composition, completed just weeks before he died. The work seems to transverse in 50 minutes nearly every facet of the human condition, seamlessly melding moments of unbridled joy, heartbreak, pathos, and ethereal transcendence. This is a composition that leaves even the most sophisticated musicians in awe of its emotional power. Both the great writer Thomas Mann and the pianist Artur Rubinstein loved this composition so much that both requested it be played at their deathbeds.
