The Houston Poetry and Music Theater will present a new musical and poetic composition, "We Lived Then on Another Planet..." This time, our theater turns to poetry from the Russian diaspora. The composition features almost exclusively poets from the first wave of emigration.

The first wave of emigration that followed the Russian Revolution is one of the most tragic events in Russian history in the twentieth century. That wave was the most massive and significant in its contribution to world culture in the 20th century. A huge number of intellectuals made up the most significant part of the overall exodus from Soviet Russia in the early years of the Bolshevik Revolution. In emigrating, Russian writers and poets sought not material well-being, but freedom of expression. Having preserved the Russian language for seventy years in foreign lands, the literature of the Russian diaspora has accumulated considerable wealth. Gone with the winds of time and disaster, Russian émigré poets are only now sharing their legacy with us. Their poetry is returning. The composition includes poems and romances by poets who emigrated, already recognized and well-known (Tsvetaeva, Khodasevich, G. Ivanov, Vertinsky), and poets of the émigré generation, virtually unknown until the end of the last century.
