Houston History Alliance

ABOUT

THE HOUSTON HISTORY ALLIANCE IS A PERCOLATOR OF HOUSTON’S HISTORY, FACILITATING OUR COMMUNITY TELLING THE STORY OF THE CITY RATHER THAN HAVING IT’S HISTORY TOLD TO IT.

BOTTOM’S UP!

We are a connection point and catalyst between the general public and Houston’s many history-centric organizations – our Community Partners – whose mission it is to tell a particular part of the city’s story. We recognize that the connection between historian and community must not be a one-way relationship; every person is in their own way a curator, genealogist, and historian and collectively our community is a vast repository of the city’s history since it’s founding in 1836 .

OUR HISTORY

Formerly known as the Houston History Association, the Alliance’s new name reinforces the group’s commitment to serving as a resource for Houston’s existing historical, preservation, and educational organizations and institutions.

Formed in 2005 by then-Mayor Bill White and Betty Trapp Chapman, the Association was intended to provide a common forum for educating Houstonians about the city’s history.

We hold an annual Houston History Conference, and are producing the Handbook of Houston History in conjunction with the Texas State Historical Association. The Handbook will be published online as part of TSHA’s Handbook of Texas. We also maintain a website (www.houstonhistoryalliance.org), generate a newsletter and wrote the “Guide for Researching Neighborhood Histories.” As we move forward, we will expand our programming to further spread the word about Houston’s diverse past.

WHEN DOES SOMETHING OR SOMEONE BECOME “HISTORIC”?

The answer? NOW. As INXS said, “All you got is this moment… The 21st Century’s Yesterday.”
