RED is a powerful two-character play that explores the life of abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko as he works on a series of murals, commissioned by the Seagram Corporation, for a new upscale restaurant in the 1950s. The play delves into the artist’s struggles with his identity, his role in the art world, and the meaning of art itself. Rothko’s complex relationship with his young assistant, Ken, is at the heart of the play, revealing the tensions between artistic vision, commercialism, and personal ambition. As Rothko grapples with his legacy and the evolving art scene, his philosophical conversations with Ken explore the price of artistic integrity and the sacrifices demanded by creative genius.
