Weaving Worlds is a multidisciplinary collaboration curated by the interdisciplinary arts nonprofit Garage Arts Project, and brings together authors Chitra Divakaruni (McDavid Professor of Creative Writing at University of Houston) and Saborna Roychowdury, musicians Hope Cowan (Affiliate Artist in Harp at University of Houston) and Indian classical singer Mahalakshmi Krishnan, and Indian classical dancer Sandhya Raghuraman.
In this innovative and emotional performance, the two authors read passages from their novels that discuss the themes of resilience, war, class, conflict and courage through women’s experiences. Their words are interpreted and amplified by dance, singing, and harp. The elements of music, dance, and spoken word weave together to create a spell-binding experience that draws the audience into a dramatic world full of historical and cultural stories. These stories celebrate the resilience and strength of women even in times of strife. By combining elements of an author reading with an immersive music and dance performance, the audience can deeply relate to the thematic material presented. The texts focus both on Indian culture and history as well as the deeply personal stories of the women in the books. These themes are brought to life by music and dance that draws on influences from both the Indian classical tradition and Western classical music. This cross-cultural and multidisciplinary approach is an opportunity for people of all walks of life to experience a truly unique live art performance. The performance is followed by an interactive Q&A with the authors and artists, giving the audience a chance to fully engage with the themes explored and share their own experiences.
