DiverseWorks presents The Past Does Not Need You, But It Borrows Your Mouth, an exhibition of newly commissioned works by Hong Hong. The exhibition consists of a four-channel video installation titled “North, South, East, West” and a central sculpture titled “心”. These projects, along with a performance that activates them, consider the formation of geography as poetic structure; time as acquisition; the past as erosion; and language as something transmitted through nonlinear experience. The exhibition unfolds as two coexisting experiences. On March 17 & 18 from 12–5 PM, visitors can view the four-channel video installation and sculpture. Evening performances at 7:30 PM, with doors opening at 6:30 PM, bring the installation and live performance together in a unified program. The project builds on Hong’s research into Angel Island, a Chinese detention center on the West Coast from 1910 to 1940 that imprisoned Chinese immigrants.

This presentation is the first public iteration of Hong’s ongoing project A Poem As Long As…, developed as part of her 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts.
