The mission of Writers in the Schools is to engage children in the joy and power of reading and writing.
Every child has a voice, and Writers in the Schools (WITS) works to make them heard. Since 1983, WITS has paired professional writers with educators in K-12 classrooms, providing long-term, high-quality creative writing workshops for students and professional development opportunities for teachers. In addition, WITS places writers in hospitals, shelters, and other community sites with free programming for children and families. Through teen programs like the Houston Youth Poet Laureate initiative with the City of Houston, Meta-Four Houston youth slam team, and the Bayouth Collective leadership council, WITS also empowers young adults to develop their creative voices through civic engagement. In these programs and more, WITS shares the power of storytelling, serving over 57,000 students and teachers in the Houston area annually.
