Roberto Weil: recent works

Explorations on Landscape (Houston, 2019) features artworks by Venezuelan cartoonist Roberto Weil (Caracas, 1967), and brings together pieces of a diversity of formats and media, from acrylic paintings to hand-painted prints.  The exhibition explores the artist’s most recent thematic investigations:  nature, urban life, landscape, and space travel, as well as more intimate and emotional themes like music, playfulness, personal memories, and familiar spaces.  Additionally, the artist explores the agonic landscape of the political situation of his native Venezuela, in the context of the democratic crisis of the last decades.

Weil’s use of a metaphorical journey to approach a nation and its landscapes is a clear reference to understand how our emotional imaginaries become the true baggage that each of us carry to contain what defines our identity.  In other words, each of our travels is accompanied by the cultural traits that define us:  our music, our visual arts, our bodies in movement, our gastronomic memory, our games, our rhythms.  Thereby, this itinerary that Roberto Weil offers us represents a way to immerse ourselves in the symbolic nature to discover ourselves both as individuals and as a collective expressive force.  To look at his landscapes is also a way to look at ourselves in the mirror.
