Americans United for Separation of Church and State

Mission

Americans United for Separation of Church and State is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit educational and advocacy organization that brings together people of all religions and none to protect the right of everyone to believe as they want — and stop anyone from using their beliefs to harm others. We fight in the courts, legislatures, and the public square for freedom without favor and equality without exception.

About

Americans United for the Separation of Church and State is the only organization dedicated solely to defending the separation of church and state. We are the shield protecting the foundational American principle of freedom of religion—including the right to believe or not believe—for all.

Church-state separation protects everyone’s right to believe, or not believe, as long as they don’t harm others. The separation of church and state guarantees a government that is not infused with religion. Why is a government like this so important? An officially non-religious government gives no preference to any one mode of faith. That’s why religious leaders have backed church-state separation from the earliest days of the American colonies to the folks who founded AU in 1947 to the clergy on AU’s Faith Advisory Council today. True religious freedom is the most promising way to make certain we can all live together fairly and peacefully.

The Greater Houston chapter was cofounded in 1995 by a public-school educator who “did not want to teach Sunday school five days a week.” The chapter presents educational programs, speaks out against governmental actions or policies that infringe on church-state separation, and encourages our supporters to make their voices heard. We work with the national office and other AU chapters in Texas and elsewhere. If you’d like to get involved and “do something,” we urge you to join Americans United for as little as $35 a year.
