Houston Masterworks Chorus

Mission

A choral community celebrating and connecting people through the power of music: inspiring, uplifting, and educating.

About

Houston’s Chorus Celebrating 36 years!

HMC intentionally recruits singers, staff, and volunteers reflecting the City of Houston. We never imagined the pandemic would offer so many opportunities. We continue building upon partnerships such as the 2020 HMC sponsored “United in Song” Virtual Festival of Choirs that included 5 Houston choral groups. We intentionally remove barriers to concert attendance by offering reduced ticket prices, live streamed concerts and concerts in neighborhood coffee shops, and parks. Over the past two years we have hired more than 100 local professional soloists, musicians and technicians to augment our performances. This season’s partnerships include: Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, The Houston Jazz Ensemble, Space City Sound, The Houston Boychoir, and HISD Inertia Dance Company. The season finale, The Houston Choir Festival, premieres Illuminare by Elaine Hagenberg co-hosted by Chapelwood United Methodist Church Chorus with 200 singers from across the City.

HMC is a community arts organization dedicated to challenging our audiences to think deeply and feel uplifted as we weave together music, dance, and art. Under the artistic direction of Dr. Paulo Gomes, the programming  inspires singers to join us and introduces our audience to multi-cultural masterworks: Villa-Lobos, Handel, Beethoven, Verdi, Ramirez, Todd, Arnesen, and Hagenberg. The auditioned, all-volunteer chorus is selected from across Houston and outlying areas with ongoing audition opportunities throughout the year. HMC performs 7 concerts this year plus 4 outreach concerts. Vision: Performing diverse masterworks, showcasing new compositions and talent, moving people out of their ordinary.HMC is a 501c(3) community nonprofit.
