The Westheimer String Quartet and Carya String Quartet are supremely excited to present our first-ever collaboration, featuring an evening of thrilling new quartet music before joining forces for an old favorite!
WSQ opens the program with William Bolcom’s Three Rags (1989), a jaunty take on the old genre made famous by the likes of Scott Joplin and Jelly Roll Morton. William Bolcom, Pulitzer- and Grammy-winning American composer, combines the charm of the ever-popular “ragtime” genre from the turn of the 20th-century with his characteristic wit and creativity in these charismatic works. Named for the “ragged” rhythmic feel that pervades the style, you'll be whistling these tunes well into next week. The Carya Quartet will then perform the evocative “Rosa Parks String Quartet” (2015) by DBR, fusing hip-hop and classical genres in a unique and compelling experience for the performers and audience alike.
Finally, the two quartets will join each other on stage for the magnificent String Octet by Felix Mendelssohn. Written at just sixteen years old, this stunning work is one of the most beloved works of chamber music of all time, and will surely make for a thrilling end to the evening.
