Teatro Loft
25 de Noviembre o El Comportamiento de las Mariposas
It is a tribute to bravery and memory.
The Butterflies: A Theatrical Endeavor to Tell and Honor the Truth.
Written by Argentine playwright Jimena Coppolino, November 25th or the Behavior of Butterflies is a tribute to four women, the Mirabal sisters, three of whom were murdered by the order of Dominican dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, in one of the most gruesome episodes in Caribbean history.
Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Mirabal were women committed to justice in the Dominican Republic, and for raising their voices in demand of democratic order, they were silenced on November 25th. To ensure this date is never forgotten, the UN declared it the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. They called themselves "butterflies," a pseudonym they used for the clandestinity of their struggle. In this play, their stories are rescued through the voice of Dedé, the sister who survived to tell the truth. This is also a tribute to Dedé and a social commitment to sharing her story.
The Butterflies is not just a women's story; it is a cry of humanity for democracy, freedom, and dignity.
What the public will see on stage is a human, organic, and symbolic encounter; it's theatrical poetry. Directed by Georgina and Josefina who also perform together with Viviana, and who are joined by a group of sensitive artists in the lighting design, music, set design. All united so that the public can see the live butterflies in their garden telling their stories.
