Celebrating Women in our lives through movement and storytelling

Creative Minds Collaborative (CMC) presents Essays in Motion, a powerful evening of dance, music, and storytelling that uplifts the voices, journeys, and strength of women. Featuring a compelling blend of new and revival works performed to live music, Essays in Motion brings together former ballerinas, contemporary dancers, rising artists, and acclaimed musicians in a rich exploration of identity, resilience, and creative expression.

This multifaceted performance invites audiences to connect with stories of inner transformation and community support through unique choreographic voices:

Reset

Choreography: Hayden Stark and Shohei Iwahama

A raw, kinetic duet that delves into the cycles of renewal and the possibilities of reconnection through movement.

Mandala

Choreography: Nao Kusuzaki | Performed by Houston Contemporary Dance Company

Inspired by the life of Japanese American leader Donna Cole, Mandala honors women as cornerstones of community. This six-minute trio captures the spirit of empowerment, friendship, and shared identity that echoes across generations.

Tuning to Grace

Choreography: Jennifer Mabus

This work was originally created for 6 O’Clock Dance Company, this year, and will be reworked on accomplished Houston Dancers. It is about turning inward and listening/creating from your highest self.

She, Unfolding (World Premiere)

Choreography: Nao Kusuzaki

In a deeply personal premiere, former Houston Ballet artists return to the stage—now mothers, mentors, and professionals in new fields—to share their stories behind and beyond the stage. We explore how movement and women evolve across life stages, and the critical role of the support system around us. Accompanied by live cello and violin, by Patrick Moore and Ingrid Gerling.

Featuring artists:

Mimi Patman (former Houston Ballet Principal Dancer)
Lisa Petrozzi (former Houston Ballet and Texas Ballet Theater Dancer)
