Titled Gasp, this project is an evening highlighting composer Andrew Lienhard and choreographer Anat Grigorio. Lienhard’s work in collaboration with contemporary dance choreographers Roberta Paixao Cortes, Dawn Dippel and Lindsey McGill is a conversation between a soundscore for different instruments centering on the piano that will include improvisation, pulsating sounds, out of sync rhythms and pauses. The set will contain recycled instruments such as piano and bass, found on the street after hurricane Harvey. Created for the company's first full evening production, Inperson features international choreographer Anat Grigorio in collaboration with the company musicians. Traumatic experiences such as preparing for a hurricane to hit one’s city, going through it and the aftermath of it can cause hyperventilation, where one breathes excessively, causing a decrease in blood carbon dioxide levels that can lead to shortness of breath, chest tightness, or even panic attacks in some individuals. On the contrary, music and dance have been proven to aid in normalizing one’s breathing as sound processing begins in the brainstem, which also controls the rate of one’s heartbeat and respiration. Movement increases cardiovascular endurance elevating awareness to an individual's breathing. Gasp aims to offer a unique channel of information and awareness to traumatic experiences and its effects on one's health while also encouraging the mitigation of natural disasters through creative sets made out of recycled instruments. Preparing for a natural disaster can be overwhelming, and most people are unaware of how movement and music can have a positive effect on such a traumatic process. The exploration of this theme through improvised and set sounds and pulsating movement will be a unique way to learn and become aware of one’s breathing and breath changing patterns while dealing with experiences common to the Houston region. Gasp encourages people to seek coping mechanisms in the arts to deal with the anxiety of a looming natural disaster and the experience of it.
Gasp features performances by Roberta Paixao Cortes, Lindsey McGill, Thomas Helton, and guest performers Dawn Dippel (dancer), James Murphy (saxophone) and Pelayo Parlade (piano).
This is Group Acorde’s seventh full evening production featuring all original collaborative works. Group Acorde is funded in part by Dance Source Houston’s GroundWork Grant program and California Community Foundation/Jane Greenberg. This project is made possible by a grant from Texas Commission on the Arts and The City of Houston though Houston Arts Alliance.
