Group Acorde

GONE

10th Anniversary Celebration

In celebration of Group Acorde’s 10th anniversary season, GONE features past works choreographed by founding members Roberta Paixao Cortes and Lindsey McGill with soundscore by founding member Thomas Helton, as well as a world premiere by guest choreographer Andrea Dawn Shelley. True to the mission of Group Acorde, every work features an original composition created alongside the contemporary choreography and is performed live. This evening explores the theme of grief, inherent in the nature of revisiting work made in the past. Performance art is often entangled with the current state of our desires, perspectives, and place in society where acknowledgment of these situations can be unsettling, disappointing, or even comforting. The works presented in GONE display different sides of experiencing grief and coping. It is our hope that the audience will feel connected to the sounds and visual elements presented and have a sense of reflection and recognition.

Set on the company founding members in 2016, “Fear: a work in progress” is the first piece ever created by Group Acorde! Choreographed by Roberta Paixao Cortes with composition by Thomas Helton (bass), the work highlights three artist’s takes on their own individual fears through choreographed and improvised movement and sound, showcasing how the company started its collaborations and creative processes 10 years ago.

Subject: see attachment” features original music, choreography, and spoken word inspired by shared images, words, and videos emailed by each artist in an attempt to communicate their current relationships, motivations, and what is on their heart over distance. Common themes of trust, vulnerability, and playfulness emerged, and the piece is presented in a series of small scenes where the artists are given dynamic limitations in expressing themselves in their primary art medium as well as challenged to cross over into each other's mediums. Premiered and performed in 2017 by choreographer Lindsey McGill, the recreation of this piece explores where we are today as people, artists, and the relationships that our company has developed within the community since.

Created by Andrea Dawn Shelley for the artists of Group Acorde, “Every Root Is An Anchor” is a world premiere that features an original composition by Thomas Helton for piano, bass, and cello. The work is inspired by the ancient, interconnected, and altruistic society of trees. Deep beneath the soil, a vast network of microscopic fungi links them into a living grid. Through it, they exchange chemical signals, minerals, and gentle acoustic vibrations that mirror our own communities. Trees thrive through mutual aid, proving they are far more like us than we ever realized. They heal together. They adapt together. They dance together. “There's nothing wrong with having a tree as a friend,” Bob Ross beautifully reminded us. “Everybody needs a friend. Even a tree.”

GONE features performances by Roberta Paixao Cortes, Lindsey McGill, Thomas Helton, and guest performers Erin Wright (bass) and Pelayo Parlade (piano).

GONE is made possible by a grant from Texas Commission on the Arts and The City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. This project is supported by a Dance Floor grant from Houston Met Dance. The grant program is made possible by funding from the Houston Endowment.
