Three composers. One poet. Music nobody has heard yet, brought to life onstage for the first time.
New Voices is Musiqa's stage for artists making their first appearance with us: world-premiere clarinet quartets by Rolando Gómez, Jaylin Vinson, and Justin Weiss, paired with original poetry through our long-running partnership with Inprint.
Justin Weiss is Musiqa's 2025 Emerging Composer Commission winner, a program that identifies promising artistic talent and provides performance opportunities with an innovative, contemporary music chamber ensemble. Justin holds a PhD from the University of Chicago, conducts Chicago's Mycelium New Music, and has had his work performed by ensembles from Quatuor Diotima to Sandbox Percussion Quartet.
Jaylin Vinson is Musiqa's 2025 Catalyst Commission winner, a program for local Houston-area composers that identifies promising artistic talent and provides mentoring from acclaimed Houston-area composers, along with professional opportunities in an innovative, contemporary music chamber ensemble. Jaylin's music has been called "an awakening" by the Sioux City Journal and has been performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Recent projects include an Afrofuturistic flute concerto and a chamber opera commissioned by Washington National Opera.
Rolando Gómez is the 2025 winner of the Cross-Country Chamber Consortium's Black, Latinx and Indigenous Emerging Composer Commission — a partnership among five ensembles nationwide (Atlanta Chamber Players (Atlanta), Ensemble New SRQ (Sarasota), Musiqa (Houston), Picosa (Chicago) and SOLI Chamber Ensemble (San Antonio)) formed to widen the platform for composers from communities historically underrepresented in modern chamber music. A Miami-born tresero, Rolando writes music at the intersection of Cuban, jazz, and classical traditions, and founded Tres Contemporáneo to expand the repertoire for the Cuban tres.
Each of them has written something new for Musiqa's stage and beyond.
