Revels Houston is a community based performing arts organization. Revels Houston strives to create community, drawing from multicultural traditions including music, dance, and drama.
The Revels story began with John Langstaff, a concert baritone and educator. He created a review in 1957 to recreate the joy of celebrating holiday music with friends and family. Although the review won critical accolades, it was not a financial success. In 1966, NBC asked Langstaff to recreate the review for a television special with Dustin Hoffman as the dragon. In 1971, John Langstaff's daughter, Carol, created a live show at Harvard's Sanders Theater. This production was successful both critically and financially and became an eagerly anticipated annual event in the Boston area. Eventually, John Langstaff's relatives launched new Revels companies in major cities where they settled. When David Langstaff, John's nephew, moved to Houston in 1990, he founded Revels Houston. Our first Christmas Revels opened in December 1991 at the University of Houston's Cullen Performance Hall.
