The Moon, the Princess, and the Bamboo Cutter

Choreographer: Nao Kusuzaki
Composers: Johann Sebastian Bach and Yumi Kurosawa
Inspired by “The tale of the bamboo cutter”
written in late 9th-10th century Japan.

The piece is an adaptation and retelling of a story which follows the life of a princess from the Moon who is discovered as a baby inside the stalk of a glowing bamboo plant. After she grows, her beauty attracts suitors seeking her hand in marriage, whom she turns away by challenging them each with an impossible task; she later attracts the affection of the Emperor. At the tale’s end, the princess reveals her celestial origins and returns to the Moon.

“La Dolce Vita” is a contemporary ballet set in a sunlit Italian piazza, where friendships spark, stories intertwine, and music fills the air. A playful, heartfelt celebration of Italy’s culture and folk rhythms.
