Gente de Teatro

Mission

Gente de Teatro (GdT) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit theater company founded in 1995 in Houston, TX, USA.
GdT's mission is to promote culture and Spanish-language theater through plays by renowned Latin American and international playwrights.

GdT seeks to enrich the quality of life in the Houston community through education, culture, and entertainment. All productions are presented in Spanish, and some include English surtitles.

About

Gente de Teatro-Houston (GdT) was founded after several members performed in Mario Benedetti’s “Primavera con una esquina rota,” directed by Ricardo Yamal at Rice University. Its founding members, Esteban Gago, Marcela Salas, and Claudia Soroka, recognized Houston’s need for a Spanish-language theatre company to present renowned Latin American plays in their original written language. Since its founding, GdT has staged 39 productions. Except for a 30-month hiatus due to the pandemic, GdT has been the only theater organization in Houston to present Spanish-language plays continuously since 1995, primarily at Rice University and at MATCH. GdT has built a loyal, mostly bilingual audience that continues to grow each year.

In 2017, 2018, and 2019, GdT was nominated in the category of “Most Improved Theater Company” by the Broadway World Houston Region Awards. In 2018, the company received The Bridge Award at Stages Theatre during the Sin Muros Theater Festival, in recognition of its long-standing work and for building “bridges” within Houston’s artistic community.

In 2021, GdT expanded its original mission to include plays by renowned international authors. GdT was nominated by the Broadway World Houston Region Awards in the category of “Best New Play” for Madenusa by C. Soroka (2019), and in both “Best New Play” and “Best Ensemble Performance” for Toc Toc by Laurent Baffie, Spanish version by Julián Quintanilla (2022).

In 2022, GdT received recognition from the Consulate of Spain in Houston for its work and support of the Octubre Ibérico program, held in celebration of Spain’s National Day. Gente de Teatro is also part of the cultural agenda of the Argentine Foreign Ministry – Cultural Affairs Office
