Spring Soirée

Garage Arts Project

Spring Soirée

Stories Woven Through Dance

Join us for the Spring Soirée, an intimate celebration of dance, music, and storytelling hosted by the Garage Arts Project. The evening will feature captivating dance performances, offering a blend of emotional reflection and cultural richness.

Choreographed by Adam Castaneda, and performed by dancers of the Pilot Dance Company, the opening act A Quiet Ending, is a piece that reflects on the quiet, peaceful conclusion of a life defined by faith, family, and perseverance, honoring the choreographer’s grandmother.

The main performance, Moving Images, is a mesmerizing collection of dance works presented in the Shilpanatanam style, a unique movement form pioneered by Maya Kulkarni. The 45-minute performance will feature four distinct pieces, each drawing from classical Indian poetry, folk traditions, and temple arts, exploring themes of love, loss, and spirituality. Each piece in Moving Images is a powerful representation of storytelling through movement, rooted in deep cultural traditions. The performance will make its Houston debut at MATCH.

Come and experience the power of dance as a storytelling medium, blending ancient traditions with contemporary expression, in a truly unforgettable evening.Read more

Ethnography of Afro-Venezuelan Music

Ethnography of Afro-Venezuelan Music is a multidisciplinary educational conference that explores the expression of the rich cultural traditions of African culture and European religious practices in Venezuela, particularly focusing on how music serves as a medium for spiritual, social, and cultural expression. It differentiates Afro-Venezuelan music from the broader Afro-Latin music scene in social and religious terms and disseminates the elements that converge in the sociohistorical construction of the Afro-Venezuelan vision and its impact on the Venezuelan colonial context.

The project, which includes videos, music, and dance, aims to strengthen ties between African American and Venezuelan communities and promote a dynamic cultural exchange. This educational-cultural activity is free for the general public.

Ethnography of Afro-Venezuelan Music is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. Read more
