Challenging Brown

Shabach Enterprise

Challenging Brown

Vanguard Series, Installment III

Challenging Brown, written by Cris Eli Blak, winner of the 2025 Fade To Black Arts Festival and The Ensemble Theatre’s Premier Theatre Readings, is a powerful story of perseverance, education, and the cost of breaking barriers in a divided America.

Set in 1967 Texas, the play follows Gordon Brown as he becomes the first Black teacher at an all-white high school, stepping into a world shaped by open hostility, quiet resistance, and the daily pressure of proving he belongs. As Gordon confronts racism from both students and faculty, he must lean on his convictions, his dignity, and the support of those closest to him to navigate a system built to reject his presence.

This presentation is the 3rd installment of the Shabach Enterprise Vanguard Series, which spotlights compelling new work and bold contemporary voices.

Read more

Preacher: The Last One

Preacher: The Last One

Written by Donna Holloway; Directed by John-Michael Manley

Preacher: The Last One  is a compelling gospel play written by Donna Holloway. Set within the walls of a small Pentecostal church, the story centers on Pastor Warfield, a modern-day preacher who has fully committed his life to serving God. Throughout the play, Pastor Warfield faces significant challenges on his spiritual journey, confronting issues such as sex, jealousy, politics, and encounters with demonic spirits.

As Pastor Warfield strives to embody the true spirit of a man of God, he must navigate complex and difficult situations. These trials test his faith and dedication, highlighting the struggles that arise when worldly concerns threaten to interfere with spiritual growth and devotion. At a crucial point in the play, members of the congregation encourage Pastor Warfield to lead a much-needed revival. This event becomes a turning point, prompting the church community and Pastor Warfield to recognize the sacred purpose of their church as a temple devoted to serving God.

The play emphasizes that worldly problems and distractions should not overshadow the importance of maintaining a sincere heart focused on uplifting God’s work. Preacher: The Last One is a drama that invites the audience to actively participate in singing and praising the Lord. The play delivers a powerful spiritual message and reinforces the themes of worship and dedication.Read more

Métro Boulot Dodo

Anthony Almendárez

Métro Boulot Dodo is a performance in four movements sonically exploring the evolution of work and labor from nature to industry, into its present form. Borrowing from the French expression, the title makes reference to the dominating presence of work in our lives and its prioritization in the United States as the country pursues its shift from a collective experience, to the hyper individualistic. In investigating the changing soundscape, the work aims to collectively imagine what the future can hold as we begin the shift into a more techno driven future.Read more

The evening features an original score by composer and multimedia artist Badie Khaleghian and vocal director Kari Francis. Together, they integrate live vocal chanting performed directly by the dancers, creating an immersive, multi-sensory interplay between breath, voice, and body.
